The Wichita Falls High School (abbreviated WFHS) is a public high school in Wichita Falls, Texas. It is one of the three high schools that make up the Wichita Falls Independent School District (WFISD).
With its location at 2149 Avenue H and Coyote Blvd., the school caters to secondary school students in grades nine through twelve.
Wichita Falls High School, the city’s original high school, is fondly referred to by locals as “Old High.” Originally established in 1891, the school’s current building dates back to 1922 and is recognised as a state landmark.
The coyote is the official mascot of the high school.
Distribution of Students
A total of 1,473 students attended Wichita Falls High School in the 2013-2014 academic year. Of these students, 47.41% were White, 35.2% were Hispanic, 15.6% were African American, 1.8% were Asian, and 0.3% were Native American.
Review of Accountability for the 2011-2012 School Year
Wichita Falls High School is now rated “Academically Acceptable” by the Texas Education Agency, as of the accountability ratings given on August 1, 2012.
Wichita Falls Independent School District (WFISD) also presented Wichita Falls High School with an honour for highest GPA annually from 1991 to 2002. In 2002, they stopped giving out the prize.

During its heyday, the Wichita Falls team was a challenge for any club to face, at home or on the road.
From the late 1930s until the early 1970s, Wichita Falls’s football team was nationally regarded as one of the best. Wichita Falls Coyotes made it to the state finals 10 times between 1937 and 1971 under the direction of head coaches Ted Jeffries (1931–43), Thurman Jones (1944–46), Joe Golding (1947–61), and Donnell Crosslin (1965–79), with the team winning six of those games.
Wichita Falls High School’s football team has reached the postseason 45 times since 1923, with the 2022-2023 season marking the 45th appearance in the playoffs. In that time, they have won 36 district titles, 8 quarterfinal titles, 17 regional titles, 21 area titles, 23 bi-district titles, and 21 area conference titles.
Wichita Falls High School’s storied football programme was recognised by Texas Monthly as the best in school history in September 2007.
The journalism club at Wichita Falls High School
The journalism club at Wichita Falls High School is responsible for producing both the school newspaper and yearbook.
For several years prior to her retirement in 2013, Mrs. Anetta Reusch oversaw the award-winning programme. Mr. Jason Byas has since assumed the role of faculty mentor for the group.
WFHS Publishing was formed in 2013 after a reevaluation of the company and the merger of the two magazines. The change was made to reduce expenses for the newspaper and yearbook and to enhance coordination amongst all of the program’s products.
The newspaper, The Coyote News, has increased annual sales since the reorganisation, and it has turned a profit for the first time in over five years.
The paper also publishes an online version of the article. The Wichita Falls High School History Guide, published by WFHS Publications, is also available online.
Hirschi High
The John R. Hirschi Math/Science International Baccalaureate Magnet High School
Often referred to as Hirschi High or HHS, the John R. Hirschi Math/Science International Baccalaureate Magnet High School may be found at 3106 Borton Lane in Wichita Falls, Texas. For those students who are interested in delving deeper into subjects like maths, science, English, Spanish, French, history, and the arts, this school is an excellent option because it is recognised as an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School and offers both the Diploma (IBDP) and Middle Years Program (MYP). Besides providing theoretical and practical training in aviation, studio/visual art, and nursing, Hirschi is an award-winning member of the Magnet Schools of America Association. [2] With 850 students enrolled, Hirschi is a part of the Wichita Falls Independent School District (WFISD) and is regulated by the Texas Education Agency.
History
Businessman John R. Hirschi saw a dire need for a junior and senior high school in northern Wichita Falls, so he donated the land on which the school now stands to the Wichita Falls Independent School District (WFISD). The school opened in September 1962 with Principal A. D. Neal at the helm. Students in the school’s first year selected the school’s official colours, Columbia Blue and Scarlet Red, and the school mascot, the Husky.
Mrytle Hirschi Ledford, Hirschi’s daughter, was dedicated to the education of Hirschi students until her death in 1994, long after her father had passed away. She frequently gave out scholarships and financial aid.
In the early 1970s, student numbers reached a critical mass that necessitated the construction of a new structure to house the junior high. Formerly known as Northwest Junior High, the new Hirschi Junior High was renamed Kirby Junior High in honour of longtime WFISD administrator G.H. Kirby.
Built in the early 1980s for the basketball and volleyball teams, the Husky Field House is also home to the band hall and is notable for its distinctive tartan playing surfaces.
By focusing heavily on mathematics and science and building a state-of-the-art technology lab on the second floor, Hirschi High School was designated as a magnet school in 1992. Hirschi was accepted as an IB Global School in 1998, and its first graduates received diplomas and certificates in 2002. Since February 2002, Hirschi has been authorised to provide the IB Middle Years Program, and in cooperation with Kirby Junior High, they run the programme.
In January 2009, Hirschi began offering courses for college credit in cooperation with Midwestern State University (MSU) that would be presented on campus by MSU instructors.
Due to Hirschi’s proximity to Sheppard Air Force Base, many of the school’s students have parents who are now serving in the military or who have served in the past.
When it comes to Wichita Falls public high schools, Hirschi is the third oldest.
Diploma of the International Baccalaureate
High school students at Hirschi have access to a curriculum that is on par with that found in other countries throughout the world.
[5] Hirschi has been recognised as an IB Global School since March 2007; as such, it is able to provide its juniors and seniors with access to the IB Diploma Program (IBDP) and its freshmen and sophomores with access to the IB Middle Years Program (MYP). Kirby Junior High, which provides the MYP to students in grades 7 and 8, collaborates with Hirschi to smooth the passage from eighth to ninth grade. If a student earns an IB Diploma and scores well on all exams, they will be able to transfer at least 24 hours of college credit to any public university in Texas. Students who are not interested in the whole diploma programme can still work towards earning IB Certificates in specific areas of study. Students at Hirschi High School are the only ones in the Wichita Falls area to have the opportunity to sit for both the International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement tests at the end of the academic year. [6] Hooding of applicants for the Hirschi diploma is performed by the IB Coordinator during the May commencement ceremonies.
Due to its proximity to Sheppard Air Force Base, Hirschi High School provides a magnet programme in Aviation that introduces students to the fundamentals of aviation and aerospace.
As a major Air Force medical training centre, Medical Sheppard also provides a magnet programme in medicine at Hirschi, where interested students can take a set of prerequisite courses that will set them up for success in college nursing programmes and in their future careers. Wichita State University offers medical students the chance to become Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) on campus, in addition to training and employment opportunities at local medical facilities like United Regional Health Care System, the primary hospital serving the Wichita Falls metropolitan area. Hirschi students who pass the CNA exam and receive their certification are recognised with pins at the school’s annual commencement ceremony in May.
Multimedia
The computer and technology lab at Hirschi is a multimillion-dollar facility, and it’s located on the second floor of the building. Digital graphics, animation, video production, web design, newspaper, yearbook, and professional software are all areas where students in Hirschi’s multimedia department have the opportunity to develop their skills. Candidates for the IB Diploma at Hirschi may select Visual Arts as an Elective. Ten Telly Awards, given for excellence in commercials and other visual creations for businesses, have been handed to Hirschi in the past decade, a testament to the quality of work created by students in the school’s multimedia programme.
